Musical
In 1875 18 year old Frank Bullen signed up on an American whaler. From New
Bedford, Massachusetts, he rounded the globe: via Cape of Good Hope they sailed
to the Sea of Ochotsk ( North of Japan) and via the Hawaii-islands, New-Zealand
and Cape Horn back home. The trip took almost 3 years. In 1897 his book ‘The
Cruise of the Cachalot’, was published.
Jan Smeets has taken this trip report as a lead for writing ‘Jonas’, a musical
about the traditional sailing and whaling. It includes a number of, mostly
original, shanties – work songs on square-rigged ships - which will be sung by
the "Zingerij Dwarsgetuigd". The show was performed a number of times
in 2007.
See the below some
impressions.
